Teachers lead by healthy examples

Clinton Park Elementary speech therapist Kristi Crisler wants to be a really big loser.

That's in weight, not in personality.

She and many of her fellow teachers and staff at the school for grades K-1 are front and center in a district-wide push to promote proper diet and exercise habits and healthy living - and perhaps to lose weight along the way.

Crisler has lost 12 pounds through exercising both at school and at home and tweaking her eating habits to include more healthy foods.

Levine is talking about increasing your NEAT, or "non-exercise activity thermogenesis," which accounts for much of your movement and therefore caloric expenditure throughout the day.

Companies promote fit-friendly workplaces

The American Heart Association recently released its list of fit-friendly companies in the Oct. 27 issue of Forbes magazine. Two Jackson companies were among those recognized.

The AHA's Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program, which promotes physical activity and health in the workplace, listed Mississippi Baptist Health Systems and St. Dominic Health Services in its listing of business who allow employees to engage in healthy activity during work.

A new trend in video games that is gaining weight — and could help you lose some — is the virtual personal trainer.

The latest entry, due in stores in March, is EA Sports Active for the Nintendo Wii video game system. From the makers of Madden NFL Football and Tiger Woods PGA Tour video games, the interactive fitness program is being developed with the help of Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer, Bob Greene, and other experts.

  • I bought a Wii Video Game System for Christmas and I am having a blast. The funny part about it is that me and my wife are 53 years old and my son who is 26 lives with us, but he is a Playstation 3 person.
