Need a little spice in your aerobics workout? Try some salsa. Every Tuesday and Thursday at the Baptist Healthplex in Clinton, mostly women and a few men are breaking out of their shells and getting fit with salsa aerobics.

One of those men is Lt. Jeffery Scott, 41, spokesman for the Jackson Police Department. He's been taking the class for nine months and already his health has taken a turn for the better.

Group exercise classes that tout abdominal training generally center on core fitness.

“In the front of your body, that’s the rectus abdominus, what most people call your six-pack,” said abs instructor Karen Lindsey-Lloyd. “If there is fat on your abs, you can do 100 crunches and not see results. With true core training, you also work your back … it’s highly repetitive.”

One good thing about spin classes is that participants can work at their own pace.

Another, of course, is that it’s a great cardio workout. And if you plan on riding outside as well, it can be a good training ground.

“Some of the things in the class mimic what you see outdoors,” said Karen Lindsey-Lloyd, spin instructor at the Baptist Healthplex in Clinton.

It’s sometimes called “Shakira aerobics.”

Baptist Healthplex offers special water programs for individuals with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and for pregnant and postpartum women.

The arthritis aquatic classes are held in a four-foot-deep pool heated to 86 degrees. A ramp with hand rails on both sides makes entering and exiting the pool easier.

Each class includes water walking for functional endurance and exercises to improve or maintain range of motion, flexibility and muscular strength.
