Zehm Mediations To Begin
A civil lawsuit which has been ongoing for two years will now be settled out of court. The family of Otto Zehm has agreed to enter into mediations with the City of Spokane in order to reach an agreement and resolve their dispute.
Otto Zehm was a 36 year old janitor who was mentally disabled. In 2006, he was approached by police on suspicion of stealing money from a convenience store ATM and died two days later from injuries he sustained during the altercation. Further investigations into the incident revealed that the information leading to the suspicions of theft were unfounded. A federal jury found Officer Karl Thompson Jr. guilty of using excessive force and then lying about the events to cover up his actions.
Jeffrey Finer, the attorney for the Zehm family, had reported that the family wanted new training for police officers in order to education them in dealing with individual who suffer from mental illness and other disabilities. The family would also like an apology and a park to be donated in Ottos name.
Until all negotiations are final, the details of the settlement will not be revealed.
