Jackson State University will host a two-day forum next month to discuss Mississippi’s high obesity and stroke rates.

The forum, Eliminating Health Disparities in Mississippi, Stroke & Obesity, will be held on October 9 and 10 at the Hilton Jackson Convention Center.

The event will be open to the public. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and several other federal agencies.

A recent report says Mississippi is America’s fattest state for the third year in a row, and adult obesity rates across the nation are climbing steadily despite initiatives to combat the epidemic. The report says Mississippi’s adult obesity rate is 31.7 percent.

The report was based on data gathered by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
