Too much water
A co-worker sent me this e-mail, about the dangers of drinking too much water. I've heard of this, but I thought it was only in extreme cases:
We're at the height of the northern hemisphere's summer and that
means it's time for RBR's annual warning about hyponatremia -- a
serious, sometimes fatal condition caused by over-hydration.
Drinking too much water or too much of anything that does not
contain enough sodium (Gatorade doesn't) can dilute the blood's
sodium concentration and cause cells to take up water and swell.
When that happens to brain cells, seizure and death can result.
That's the point made in a blog by Emily Monosson, an RBR reader,
roadie and environmental toxicologist, at http://tinyurl.com/5wsjbj.
Read what happened to her bike-riding husband Ben during a steamy summer
century, then follow the links to 4 other articles about
hyponatremia and how to prevent it.
I try to drink a lot of water, to stay hydrated and feel better during the day ... guess I need to be careful!
