Substituting foods ...
Despite most of our best efforts, we can wind up having to eat at fast-food places. So what do you order?
The salad is one possibility (preferrably romaine lettuce or greens instead of iceberg lettuce, which has little nutritional value).
But many fast-food places are beginning to offer alternatives, such as apple slices and yogurt to the usual French fries and potato chips.
It's easy to fail to track your calories when you eat out, but most fast-food places actually post nutritional information, both in the store and on the Web.
If you read those signs, you might find out that Subway Fresh Fit Meal with a 6-inch turkey sandwich and apples is only 315 calories and only 1.5 grams of saturated fat.
By contrast, the Whopper Value Meal is 1030 calories with 16 grams of saturated fat.
That's a huge difference, isn't it?
So what strategies do you follow if you have to go with your family to a fast-food place or a restaurant?
