Water aerobics

Special to GetFitMississippi.com
Baptist Healthplex offers special water programs for individuals with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and for pregnant and postpartum women.
The arthritis aquatic classes are held in a four-foot-deep pool heated to 86 degrees. A ramp with hand rails on both sides makes entering and exiting the pool easier.
Each class includes water walking for functional endurance and exercises to improve or maintain range of motion, flexibility and muscular strength.
The multiple sclerosis aquatic program is a non-competitive exercise program offering participants the opportunity to exercise in an environment which helps minimize the effects of heat created from exercising.
The program can help provide greater range of motion while helping to increase the strength of specific muscle groups.
The D.E.E.P. aquatic class or diabetes exercise and education program provides the diabetic individual with the opportunity to exercise in a safe, monitored environment.
The participant will also receive assistance in determining patterns in his or her blood glucose values through monitoring pre- and post-exercise levels.
Natal Fit is a low-impact water aerobic exercise program for pregnant and postpartum women. The goal is to help women maintain their fitness level during pregnancy and to regain their fitness level after pregnancy.
The programs are all free for Healthplex members. Charges apply for non-members.
An information/release form and physician’s form are also required of all participants who are not members.
