Get the family dog moving too!
Walking the dog is a great way to exercise and Dogs love being with their pack. Unfortunately the doggy definition of being at heel is "walking at the pace of death while ignoring everything interesting" so if you have any kind of normally proportioned dog that can stay at heel, I highly recommend the Walkydog attachment to bicycle seatpost. www.walkydogusa.com
The seat attachment is great because it does not interfere with steering. I'd recommend a harness with it just in case of a crash so you don't yank the dog's neck. It isn't much of a workout for the humans since you gotta be careful to go slow enough to match the dog's speed and not drag him. Still, my labrador knows the word 'bicycle' and gets excited when he hears it. He seems to like to run flat out for a quarter mile or so and then we putz along in 3rd or 4th gear for 5-6 more miles with a stop for a swim at the reservoir park halfway thru.
